Ice  Hockey  Equipment

Ice hockey equipment is one of the most important factors in one of the fastest, most exciting sports in the world today. There are a multitude of manufacturers, styles, sizes and features for any given piece of gear. Some things you will want to consider when buying ice hockey equipment are things like the players age, level of play, position, size, comfort, amount of protection provided, restriction of motion, as well as expense. Our goal is to help you make the best choices and decisions by informing you before you buy your ice hockey equipment.

Things haven’t always been the way that they are today. The sport began way before the need for ice hockey equipment of todays caliber ever existed. In fact, in the early days  ice hockey equipment really was not designed around the game we know it to be today.
Let’s talk a little about those times and the ice hockey equipment that was available . The exact origin of the game is debatable. The first rules for the game were published in 1877 by the “Montreal Gazette”. Many forms of the sport were definitely played before that without formal, written rules. There is evidence that a form of the game was played in the sixteenth century in Europe. Early skates were made of carved animal bones. On the other hand, in the region of the Gulf of Bothnia around the same time they were using iron blades. Hardly the type of ice hockey equipment that we take for granted today. We have made leaps and bounds with progress and technology. It is also believed that the game was originally played in fields and then later played on frozen ponds. It was when the game came to North America that things really started to evolve. This is where the game started to transform into what we know it to be today. In the late 1800's teams, clubs, associations, and leagues began to develop. Most of these were in Canada at first then moving into the states. In 1894 in Baltimore, Maryland the first artificial ice rink was opened. In 1904 the first professional league was formed leading the way for the NHL to be established in 1917. All of this history is very interesting but it also brings up a major point we are trying to make. As the game evolves and progresses so then does the ice hockey equipment and the need for production of more and better ice hockey equipment. With all of the changes of new models,  new materials that gear is made of,  new technology, not to mention publicity and fast growing interest in the game there is a lot  to consider. Even changes in the rules can influence or even mandate the change of ice hockey equipment. Obviously, ice hockey equipment is designed around the needs and elements of the game. Here we will try to explain the elements, factors, and situations that you may need to consider when choosing ice hockey equipment for yourself. We would also like to help you with sizing ice hockey equipment from different manufacturers. We are often trying to find ice hockey equipment for other players. Many times this would be for your child, team, organization, or club. This can be very confusing and sometimes difficult. We would like to take some of the confusion and guessing out of the process. Choosing ice hockey equipment should be fun and exciting not cumbersome and stressful. Our goal is to help change confusion and guessing into good choices and decision making when buying ice hockey equipment.
